REASONS NOT TO STOP SMOKING:
Everybody smokes

Quit smoking.
Everybody smokes.

The facts

  • In Quebec, only 18% of the population aged 15 and over smokes, and this number is shrinking every year.

It’s nevertheless normal that you’d think everyone smokes. This is because of your environment :

  • Most of your friends and many of your coworkers may also be smokers;
  • Groups of smokers on a break, standing outside a building’s doors, give the impression that everyone smokes;
  • In most films and major TV series, the main characters are three to four times more likely to smoke than in real life;
  • Prior to May 31, 2008, convenience stores and other similar points of sale (which smokers visit often) were literally "wallpapered" with tobacco products.

These factors are primarily responsible for perceptions such as: "smoking is normal", "everyone smokes", or even "its relaxing", "it helps me lose weight", "it settles my nerves", etc.

Those are probably the reasons why you became curious and got the urge to try a cigarette, and then to try smoking again … and again …, especially since advertising was much more aggressive a few years ago, when you started to smoke. Soon, within a very short time, nicotine had gained control over you... (Check out the Tobacco and nicotine section.)

Fortunately, fewer people than ever before are being tricked or seduced by this smokescreen!
